The Sinémurien (the Semur area)

A history linked to the geology

When in 1844 Alcide d’Orbigny defined the stage Sinémurien, he was inspired by “Sine Muros”, old walls, from which Semur-en-Auxois got its name. This limestone with its anthracite colour is characterized by many traces of ammonites. Coming from the Morvan, the granite, easily recognised by its pinkish shades, gives the site a strong identity.
